Many would say Allison is a crazy for getting caught up in the drama surrounding Brigitte. The situation is similar to the teenage Greta Thunberg showing up at your door and telling you that your world and your house are on fire. She wants you to panic so that you will take action to save the world from climate change.
Politicians on the Left say Greta is wise and courageous. But they refuse to take the action Greta wants them to take, because they don't want to get voted out of office by angry voters, angry over Green New Deal austerity measures.
The politicians on the Right insist your house and your world are not on fire. They insist you're crazy if you think the world is being destroyed by the burning of fossil fuels.
Well, if the world is actually being destroyed by the burning of fossils, you're crazy if you think windmills and solar energy are the answer to the problem. The answer is big austerity measures, big global reductions in the use of fossil fuels, along perhaps with innovative safe nuclear. Solar panels will help a little.
On the one hand billions of people say climate catastrophe is imminent. But they refuse to do what is necessary to escape the catastrophe. They refuse to turn off their air conditioners, refuse to stop using airlines, refuse to ride bikes to work, to the stores. They refuse to stop driving cars. You could use a three-wheeled bike in the winter. 3 wheels would make it stable on ice and snow. And you have to cut way way back on your meat-eating. The beef, pork and seafood industry is a huge CO2 polluter. And steel production and concrete production have got to be slashed. And of course the mining, oil, natural gas and coal industries have to be miniturized, if in fact that is required to escape catastrophe. If it's not required, OK great, not required, but if it is required...
People buy electric cars to virtue signal yet they don't even know that coal is burned to make the electricity that drives their electric cars. If one is forced by green laws enacted by green politicians to ride push bikes to work, and forced to turn the heat way way down in the winter, and forbidden to use air conditioners in the summer, well, it's all so crazy...now if the world doesn't start cutting way way back on CO2 emissions real real soon then...what?
The Leftist politicians insist the house is on fire but they refuse to take the steps to save the burning house, because they don't want to commit political suicide. The politicians on the Left are interested primarily in getting re-elected via virtue signaling, by fooling their liberal / progressive constituencies into thinking they are taking wise and courageous steps to combat climate change, when they are doing no such thing. Joe Biden cancelled the Keystone XL pipeline deal but this did nothing to lessen the total amount of fossil fuels being burned in the world. If oil is not transported by a pipeline then ships and railroads will be used instead.
Reality says, 1) you're delusional if you deny the impending climate catastrophic, or, Reality says, 2) climate reality is not as bad as the alarmists say it is, and you're delusional if you think a climate catastrophe is coming anytime soon, or Reality says, 3) there is an impending climate catastrophe but it's insane for a nation to unilaterally impose severe austerity on itself when other countries go right on polluting, go right on fueling the catastrophe.
Allison finds herself caught in a predicament. She doesn't want to take flight from reality and do something insane. But she also doesn't want to betray a friend. This friend shows up distraught and pleading for help. What is Allison supposed to do, tell her friend to get lost?
This little novel gives one a diversion from various worries one might have, like, you might be worried that the world is burning up, or going crazy, or...
